Step-by-Step Programming Instructions:

If your Outback has a remote head key, follow these instructions for programming:

Programming New Remotes:
The keyless entry system is equipped with a code-learning feature to program new remotes or delete old ones. It can learn up to four unique transmitter codes. To register a new remote:
1. Sit in the driver’s seat, close all doors, and the rear gate or trunk lid.
2. Open and close the driver’s door once within 45 seconds.
3. Open and close the driver’s door once again.
4. Turn the ignition key from LOCK to ON 10 times within 15 seconds. An electronic tone will sound once, followed by a continuous buzzer and flashing interior light until remotes are registered.
– If steps aren’t completed within 45 seconds, start over.
5. Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door once. An electronic tone will sound for 30 seconds.
– If not done within 15 seconds, start over.
6. Before the tone stops, press the power door lock button to LOCK the same number of times as the leftmost digit of the remote’s code. For example, press the LOCK button 8 times for a leftmost digit of 8.
– Repeat this for the remaining 7 digits, pressing UNLOCK within five seconds after each series.
7. After entering all digits, within 5 seconds, press LOCK then UNLOCK once more.
– Repeat the process starting with the left digit if necessary.
8. An electronic tone will sound for 30 seconds once the eighth digit is entered. Start entering the number before the tone stops to avoid errors.
– If an error occurs, start over from step 3.
9. If there’s a delay of more than five seconds between button presses, start over from step 4.
10. If an error occurs six times, start over from step 3.
11. If the code entered the second time isn’t identical to the first, start over from step 5.
12. If an error occurs five times, start over from step 3.

To program another remote (up to four can be programmed):
1. Begin with step 4.
2. After programming all remotes, remove the key from the ignition switch and test.

Deleting Old Remotes:
To delete old transmitter codes, program four new transmitter codes into the system. If you have:
– One current transmitter, program it four times.
– Two current transmitters, program each twice.
– Three current transmitters, program two once and the third twice.
Ensure no one else is operating their keyless entry system nearby during programming to prevent unauthorized access.

For Outbacks with Smart Key:
These vehicles are not onboard programmable and require a qualified professional locksmith for smart key remote fob programming:
1. Find an automotive locksmith in your area.
2. If your vehicle is mobile, consider driving to the locksmith to save money.
3. The locksmith will use specialized computer equipment to program the smart key remote fob.
