Step-by-Step Programming Instructions:

If your key has the remote in the head, these instructions are for programming the remote portion only. You’ll need to have the key blade cut, and if there’s a transponder chip in your key, a locksmith will need to program it.

1. Begin with the key out of the ignition, the driver’s door open, all others closed, and the driver’s door unlocked.
2. Perform these steps within 5 seconds:
A. Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT turn), then pull it out.
B. Repeat step A.
3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
A. Close then open the driver’s door.
B. Close then open the driver’s door.
C. Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT turn), then pull it out.
4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
A. Close then open the driver’s door.
B. Close then open the driver’s door.
C. Close the driver’s door.
D. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it.
E. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT start), then back to OFF.
F. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle, indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.
6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds.
B. Immediately after releasing the buttons, press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle once, indicating successful programming. If the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps A and B in step 6 as the remote was not accepted.
C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.
7. Open the driver’s door.

If your RAV4 has the Smart Key System, there is no manual onboard procedure to program a keyless remote. Follow these steps:
1. Locate an automotive locksmith in your area using LocateALocksmith.com.
2. If your vehicle is still mobile, it may save you money to drive to the locksmith instead of having them come to you.
3. The locksmith will then hook up specialized computer equipment to your vehicle to program the smart key remote fob.
