Step-by-Step Programming Instructions:

This procedure is specifically for the 2005 Malibu New Body Style, and it’s important to note that the old body style Malibu does not feature a transponder system. These programming steps are tailored for USA-built vehicles, and it’s crucial to check that the first digit of your 17-digit VIN number starts with the number 1 or 4; otherwise, these procedures will not work.

Can I program a new key myself if I have no working keys? Yes, once you have obtained the new key cut by a locksmith, follow these instructions:

1. Insert the new cut key into the ignition and turn the key to the ON position for 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
2. Within 45 seconds, turn the key to OFF and then back to the ON position for another 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
3. Within 45 seconds, repeat the previous step.
4. Turn the key OFF, then back ON. The key is now programmed. Start the vehicle to test the key.

Can I program a duplicate key for this vehicle? Yes, once you have obtained the new key cut by a locksmith, follow these instructions:

1. Insert an existing programmed working key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition to the ON position for 5 seconds, then back to the OFF position.
3. Remove the existing key, and within 5 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to the ON position for 5 seconds.
4. Turn the key OFF, then back to ON. The key is now programmed. Start the vehicle to test the key.
