If you have no working keys for your Contour and it’s a V6 LX model built before 02-1998, you can program a new key yourself following these steps after having a Locksmith cut the transponder key:

1. Insert the new key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position (as far as you can go without cranking the engine). The security light on the dashboard will flash for fifteen minutes.
2. When the security light stops flashing, turn the ignition OFF, then back to the ON position. The security light will flash for another fifteen minutes.
3. Repeat step 2: turn the ignition OFF, then back to the ON position. The security light will flash for another fifteen minutes.
4. After the security light stops flashing for the third time, turn the key to the OFF position. Then turn the key to the ON position again, and the security light should stop flashing, indicating that the new key has been programmed.
5. Start the vehicle to test the new key.

If you have one working key, you can program a second key yourself by following these steps after having a Locksmith cut the transponder key:

1. Insert the existing working key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position, then back to the OFF position.
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the new key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position. The security light will illuminate for 2 seconds to indicate successful programming. Then, turn the key to the OFF position.
3. Start the vehicle to test the new key.

For Contours built after 03-1998, if you have no working keys, your options are to either call a mobile Automotive Locksmith or tow your vehicle to a Dealership for key origination and programming.
