How to Program a 2017 Ford Explorer Ignition Smart Chip Key Transponder

Step by Step How to Programming Instructions:

If your Ford Explorer has the flip key system, follow these instructions. You’ll need two previously programmed keys and the new unprogrammed key readily accessible. If you only have one working flip key, acquire a programmer.

1. Insert the first previously programmed key into the ignition.
2. Switch the ignition from off to on. Keep it on for at least three seconds but no more than ten seconds.
3. Switch the ignition off and remove the first programmed key.
4. After three seconds but within ten seconds of switching the ignition off, insert the second previously programmed key.
5. Switch the ignition from off to on again, keeping it on for at least three seconds but no more than ten.
6. Switch the ignition off and remove the second previously programmed key.
7. After three seconds but within ten seconds of switching off and removing the programmed key, insert the new unprogrammed key.
8. Switch the ignition from off to on, keeping it on for at least six seconds.
9. Remove the newly programmed key. If successful, it will start the engine and operate the remote entry system (if the new key is an integrated keyhead transmitter). If unsuccessful, wait ten seconds and repeat steps 1 through 8.

If your Ford Explorer has the smart key system, these instructions won’t apply as the vehicle is not onboard programmable. If you have one working smart key, you’ll need to buy or rent a programmer.

1. Locate an automotive locksmith in your area using LocateALocksmith.com.
2. If your vehicle is still mobile, consider driving to the locksmith to save money.
3. The locksmith will connect specialized computer equipment to your vehicle to program the smart key remote fob.
