This set of instructions is specifically designed for the 2005 Malibu New Body Style model. The older body style of the Malibu does not include a transponder system. These programming steps are applicable only to vehicles built in the USA. It’s crucial that the first digit of your 17-digit VIN number starts with either the number 1 or 4. If your VIN begins with a 2, 3, or a letter, these procedures will not be effective.
Can I program a new key myself if I don’t have any working keys? Yes, you can. Once you’ve had the new key cut by a locksmith, follow these instructions:
1. Insert the newly cut key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position for 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
2. Within 45 seconds, turn the key to OFF, then back to the ON position for another 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
3. Within another 45 seconds, repeat step 2.
4. Turn the key OFF, then back to ON. Your key is now programmed. Start the vehicle to test the key.
Can I program a duplicate key for this vehicle? Yes, you can. Once you’ve had the new key cut by a locksmith, follow these instructions:
1. Insert an existing programmed working key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition to the ON position for 5 seconds, then back to the OFF position.
3. Remove the existing key, and within 5 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to the ON position for 5 seconds.
4. Turn the key OFF, then back to ON. Your key is now programmed. Start the vehicle to test the key.
